OFA Fair hips...

Not to take away from another thread... Figured I'd start a new one....

Would you buy from a breeder (or anyone for that matter) that is breeding dogs with OFA fair hips..

I know I would if I liked everything else about the breeding pair.. And they would have to be titled..

Depends on the hips behind the dogs and relatives.

Basha - who had 'B" hips in Belgium produced a ton of OFA Goods and 2 OFA Excellents and one Fair (titled in Sch,RH, SAR dog).....Fair is not dysplastic. It is more less that perfect than Good is less than perfect.. I bred Kyra to Xito - Good to Fair and got 2 prelim Goods and 2 official Goods and the next generation has had alot of Goods as well.

I think the problem stems from people thinking, "fair is almost dysplastic" which is not the case.

I agree with looking at an entire pedigree, the historical hip production of littermates and siblings and generations behind the dog.

I would be more apt to buy a puppy from a parent with "fair" hips, if their lines have a strong consistent record of acceptable hips, than a puppy from "excellent" parents that have numerous dysplastic dogs in the history.

2 dysplastic dogs can produce a pup with "excellent" hips. But I would not want to breed back to that dog

Ditto, and I'd look into the siblings, ancestors, progeny, ZW scores if they have them.

My male came from a stud with fair hips. I think the reason he wasn't used much was because of his hip rating. He was an amazing dog. My male was rated fair as well.

Yes. My dog's mother is OFA fair. I am keeping her for the winter and she is such a nice nice bitch. There is so much more to a dog than just the hip scores.

Fair isn't dysplastic, but I would still look at ancestors, siblings, and other relatives to the dog to determine hip production.
