Deer Scat

Ok. Was walking with Cruz through the timber yesterday. The area has a dense population of whitetail deer. Cruz thought he was in a candy store. Constantly looking and eating deer scat. I know this is probably not good for him to eat, but there is so much of it around and he's quick. Leave it command just wasn't cutting it. Has anyone had problems arise from your dog eating deer scat? It doesn't seem to bother him. Didn't know if there were deseases or parasites that could be passed on through the scat.

Well it certainly didn't help his breath any :) Same problem here only with the geese. I do discourage it and try to prevent it - walk fast and on leash seem to do it - allowing no time for munchies.

can your dog eat scat if he's leashed and walking next to you?

This is one of the reasons I keep our dogs on anti-heartworm medication year-round. (Not that heartworm comes from scat, but it protects against other worms as well). We walk in fields where there is deer, rabbit, coyote, whatever, poop. Everywhere. It doesn't take long for them to grab some.

We have alot of goose poo around also. I can see it and avoid. But deer scat blends in with leaves and he finds it pretty quick.

With the harness we use ( an easywalk body harness latched in the front) yes he can. He is strong. He knows how to use his strength and his weight also to get to what he wants. Walking in the woods, it's not always practical to keep them right next to you either. There are trees and rocks and deadfall to avoid. There is a very dense population of deer around and it's not hard to find, just avoid.
