I think guardian or pet parent sounds ridiculous.

My dog is an animal, and I purchased him. I can sell him, if I want to. Therefore, I own him.

I do the "my dog"/"their person" thing too.

I don't much care what terms other people use, though. I'll get worked into a ragey froth over "they're"/"their" or misused apostrophes or "definately"... but owner vs. guardian? Whatever. Do what makes you happy.

Owner.

It's the legally correct term. It's the morally correct term. It is the term that best describes and defines the relationship.

There are a lot of people both with an AR agenda, and not, that have embraced the term "guardian." I find it disturbing. I see it as a step in changing people's attitudes toward pets and working dogs.

Children whose parents are unavailable to care for them, need to have a guardian appointed. That guardian will a legal designation, and fall under legal rules and regulations. The courts can determine that a guardian is not the best guardian for a child and change that. A child will eventually not need a guardian, but a child without a parent does need a guardian.

I don't like using the term that refers to these people, and all that they are expected to do, to refer to a pet's owners. I think both, have a lot of responsibility connected with the position. I don't think there really is any comparison.

I think the constant humanizing of animals is disturbing and can be dangerous.

I am my dogs' owner (and slave).

They really wouldn't want me to treat them like I treat people. It would be a downgrade in status.

My/our dog. Owner.

That does not mean it isn't a partnership of sorts however, I am his legal guardian/owner. I take full responsibility for him both financial, health and actions.

I use all the above..

Regardless of what you decide to say of what relation your dog is to you, it only matters on the action and what your relationship is actually like.

Because some people don't mean what they say, some say A, and mean B. While some say A and mean A, Some say A and mean Z, etc. So basically you can say your the caretaker for your beagle dog and keep it on a 4 foot chain, with a non insulated dog house in the middle of winter with a water source that is not heated to keep from freezing. You would think someone who says they are caretaker to their dog, means they have a higher value of their dog than a mere owner.. Not always true, like absolutes are not always true!

Yep. Pretty much the way it is around here also. I do refer to myself as their mom but I know the difference

i own my dogs. Animals are not humans, nor do they want to be. As long as I treat them well, I'm not injuring their psyche by being their owner. I find some of the other terminology rather grating.
