I don't know if you area new-to-GSD owner or not, but it's worth posting anyway....

GSDs are sort of low maintenance when it comes to coat, aside from regular brushing and de-furing. Their coats are very very good at shedding dirt and schmuck IF you don't shampoo them often. Mine get bathed 2-3 times a year, or if they manage to get into something that damages the coats natural dirt shedding properties. The oils in their coats keep them shockingly clean.

Shiny coats come from premium and properly balanced diet. Salmon in particular will make a black GSD look like he/she is cloaked in a liquid coat.

If you want his coat to be shiny, feed him a raw diet and supplement with Feedsentials.
Shampoo only if he gets really dirty.

Thanks for the responses guys! :] I feed both my pups Iams for large breed puppies, any thoughts on that? I'll look around for some salmon rich food :]
And yes, new to GSD's. Also have a 9mo old Husky :D

Iams isn't known to be a high quality food... Lots of info on this site about food! Raw is best but there is lots of info on higher quality kibble here.

Ward gets solid gold and taste of the wild with fish oil every day and has a soft and shiny coat (much softer than when we got him!!)

The only baths my dogs have ever gotten are after a dock jumping events where the water in the pool is flat out nasty by the end and the dogs smelled badly after. I love the Chris Christensen Spectrum One shampoo. That product line does have an enhancing shampoo for black dogs.

Otherwise a correct coat for both breeds I own (Lab and GSD) just needs brushing. Even after what amounts to taking a mud bath, I just let them dry and brush them out.

My elderly adoptees of the past (a golden retriever and a lab) would get "old dog stink" and I used Earthbath shampoos on them because they smell fantastic :)

I am not a fan of Iams, but you can easily get sucked into the dog food carnival and I don't want to contribute to that beyond saying I have fed Fromm, Acana, Dr Tims, and California Natural and been happy with them and I have also had a few foods that didn't work for my dogs, but they weren't bad foods, just not right for one or more of my crew. I do use Grizzly salmon oil as a supplement (convenient pump bottle and the dogs adore it) and I increase the amount given during the cold months.

when I bathed my black dawg, (I showed him for a time), I used black pearl shampoo, and topped him off with mink oil/blow out..

Your puppy is adorable;)

That puppy is adorable!

And I'm like the others, rarely shampooing unless there is an issue. Lucky that way. NOT lucky with the shedding though :(

We all know what we know about feeding so you need to read and make up your mind about what you are comfortable feeding (and paying for :) ) with your pup. Good info in the http://www.germanshepherds.com/forum...py-food-s.html

:)

I am like the others here. Rarely wash the dog. She did just get her christmas bath and I just use what ever is at the dog wash. Her coat is very shinny and soft. I feed Fromm right now. Have used Taste of the Wild, Wellness, and other high quality kibble in the past as well as RAW. I also give her organic coconut oil.
