Was not sure where to post this. I have horses and smooth 5 wire fencing around the place. I also have an electric fence wire on the fence to keep the horses from pushing through the bottom. Grass is always more tasty on the other side. Emma does have a safe chain link fenced yard for now, but thinking about down the road, or when I have her out with me during pasture chores.
The other day while I had Emma out in the pasture, she got very close. I had her on a leash so I was able to pull her back. Been thinking about this for some time. I know its there and so do the horses. While I know its harmless to the horses, how is it with dogs/puppies. I know it will knock me on my but after getting into it while installing - forgot to turn off the power ![]() ![]() . Was kneeling down and got bit on the head![]() In the future I was thinking of putting up 5 foot field fencing with the hot wire on top to keep the horses off and Emma in, or use an invisible fence to keep her on the property and not mess with the smooth wire horse set up. Thoughts would be appreciated - don't want the horses or Emma hurt |

We have electric fences here for our horses, goats and poddy lambs. The horse ones are more at the top but the goat/lamb ones are dog height. Luther touched it a few times as a puppy.....he is fine. just be prepared for some yelping.....they learn pretty quick where it is and don't go near it.
If you want her to be able to get through the fences I would just put it up to around the middle or higher so that it is still effective on your horses but allows her to go in and out without getting "bitten".

My MILs neighbors daughter shocked the poo out of my last GSD. Charlie respected the fence and the horses. My Lab didnt, but Charlie never touched it on his own, and when the little girl touched it and him, you just heard this loud yelp and see him flying across the yard to my MILs back porch.
He knew to never leave he property though. He would never walk off even if the lot was unfenced. Some dogs are defiant though, like my Lab. He would get a running start and just slide under the bottom tape. It touched him every time, but he didnt care if he got shocked. LO

My in-laws have electrified barbed wire and electrified wire fencing to keep the cows in. Freyja discovered it when she was about 4 months old. After the initial screeching panic, she calmed down and to this day respects the fencing. I've been shocked by the fence and can testify that it has a powerful zap (enough to keep the steers in). Freyja was fine other than her initial reaction.

Thanks so much. Ill need to check on the amps. it is a 12 volt solar system, that pulses. I know its not much as it is safe for humans - sure stings.
It is not the hot weed burner kind that my father-in-law had for his Angus cows - that system would take the hide off you. We see the vet tomorrow, so will double check. As for yard fencing, how high do I need to go. I have seen 4 to 6 feet? Thanks again |

She will scream blue murder when she touches it - but then likely stay away from it.
All mine have touched the fence at one stage or another, when the kelpie was little I had to run a "dog height" electric around the inside of the yard because he fit through the ringlock squares. He learnt very quick to stay away from the "beitey" white fence. I find the worst are the fences that operate on mains power - one of those nearly gave me a heart attack at a Stud where I worked, I had a red mark across my back through 2 layers of clothing ![]() My yard fence is 4" - they could jump it if they tried, but so far none of my dogs in 8 years have. If I owned the place I'd prefer 6" tho
