Dear GSD owners from the City,
Do all of you own a house? If not, then where do you live? I have been trying for the past few months (very desperately) to look for a nice GSD-friendly apartment to rent in the City of Chicago, which prides itself in being dog-friendly. Not 1 apartment so far. I see advertisements all over for "dog-friendly" apartments that welcome your dogs and such, but when I ask, the GSD either is too big, or falls under the restricted "aggressive" breed. I am hitting dead end after dead end. The only places that have said it would be fine, tell me that technically it isn't allowed but since management is never on the building, they will never know until I cause some problems. This seems a bit sketchy to me ![]() Any tips or advice? Thanks! |

I lived in Lincoln Park about 5 years ago with my GSD, but I owned my property.
Have you looked into using a leasing company and telling them specifically what you are looking for with a GSD? I agree a private owner would be more receptive than a managment company. The links below are a few sites you can visit and see if they can help. I like the last one, dogfriendly.com. It lists a whole bunch of info. Good luck with your search! You can call local dog rescues and the humane society to see if they know of dog friendly housing. My local animal shelter keeps a list of dog friendly housing because moving to a place that doesn't allow pets is the number one reason for people to take their pets to the shelter. You should create a dogie resume for your dog showing his vet records and any training info, and references from his vet and trainer. It would help to put a CKG title on him.
We are renters-we've had the most luck with renting private homes found on craigslist but we have had to consider renting in neighborhoods we would have never looked in had we not had dogs. Good luck. |

I live in the suburbs of Chicago and I have not had any problems with having my dogs in an apartment. Do you have to be in the City?

I am getting a house in the next year or so, which will be in the suburbs. Until then, I would like to be in the City. I see tons of people everyday walking around East Lakeview and Lincoln Park with GSDs, Huskies and such. Just makes me wonder where they all live. Surely they cannot all be rich enough to own a house within the city!
