I loved 'Merle's Door, but Pukka's Promise by Ted Kerasote is fantastic. I also liked 'The other End of the Leash' by Patricia McConnel.

I would like to second "The Art of Raising Your Puppy" by the monks of new Skete, as well as Patricia McConnels book! :D

For a training book, my go to before my pup came home was Purely Positive Training by Sheila Booth. It has a great puppy raising chapter and then goes on to help with foundation for whatever venue you train in. Congrats on your new pup! Exciting times!!
