My white GSD (7 and a half months) has been limping on and off almost every month, he'll be completly normal and out of no where one morning he will wake up and be limping. This limping last approximently 3 to 5 days and then completly goes away. Only to return about a month later and once again last 3 to 5 days. Its been the same front left leg everytime. Im thinking its got to be something in his shoulder. I had a vet examine him and she just gave him some muscle relaxers and it went away, so i dont know weather hes just got growing pains or I should worry. If any of this has happened to your GSD, please give me any advice you can offer.
THANK YOU. |

Basically you should watch how much exercise the pup is getting. Make sure you don't over exercise him. Do you think something happened and he injured the leg? Is the dog very excitable and likes to run buck wild around the place. If so try to keep him calm til he gets a bit older
My dogs at some stage strained some muscles and had slight limps as pups. They had no lasting damage though. You have to keep a close eye on the problem and make sure not to make it worse. Maybe it'll get better in it's own time. Keep the dog in good shape or it will put extra strain on the leg. Maybe somebody else will have a more accurate reply for you good luck |

It sounds like it might be pano: 01 Panosteitis: Growing Pains in Dogs - VeterinaryPartner.com - a VIN company!
You might want to ask your vet about it. |

Did they take xrays to look for Pano? Your dog is the right age for that.

If this were my dog I would be taking him in for xrays of the elbow and sending them in to a radiologist for evaluation. I don't trust physical exams anymore for a intermittent limp...

In older dogs, I have seen that be an early indication of arthritis. In younger dogs like yours, I have seen it be "growing pains" as others have mentioned.
Regardless, I think it warrants a vet visit. It is likely nothing serious but you need to know what it is and adjust your management of the pup accordingly, and the only way to do that is to have a vet workup.
