Default Getting My Dog's AKC Papers

Hello,

I just found you guys and this is my first ever post(so sorry if this is a topic I should post elsewhere). I am brand new to owning GSDs and have a 6 month old guy(Nox) that I just adore! We just started Schutzhund training two weeks ago and it is going great!

The leader of my sch group is a breeder and trainer and has been wonderful. She asked if my dog was AKC registered and I told her I declined the papers (originally didn't know much about sch and didn't think our guy would be more than a companion pet). She suggested I go ask for the papers for when we are ready to compete. I gave her Nox's breeder's website and asked her to check it out.

She replied saying that unfortunately his breeder was a typical byb and when I request papers I should NOT have to pay for them. Explained that the breeder can offer limited registration at a price lower than full registration, but she can't charge FOR the registration. So I requested papers from the breeder.

Breeder said it would be $200 to get the papers and that since Nox was from a litter that wasn't originally registered she would have to go back and register them to get me the papers.

When I put a deposit down for the pup and went to go view them she said that to get papers was an extra $200, but since I was only using Nox as a companion that I didn't need the papers. I agreed and off we went. I did not know that his litter wasn't registered AT ALL until after the fact.

I know that I unknowingly went to a byb. Now that I am involved in sch I will NEVER repeat my mistake...I now fully understand why it is so important to have to prove your dog's breed worthiness through show/titling/working etc....I already feel HORRIBLE that I didn't figure out before hand what was going on. So please go easy on me in that arena. I promise I am not as stupid as this story makes me seem, I was just overly eager to get my puppy and didn't do enough research. And although buying from her was a mistake, I love my guy and the best I can do is not repeat the mistake. I am SO happy to have met this wonderful sch club, and especially thankful for everything they are teaching me.

I want registration just so when I compete I can say he is a gsd. I know it isn't necessary, but it would be nice....what would you do? Pay? Go to AKC to see if they can make her give it to me? Any advice on my situation? Am I just SOL? The Dam and Sire are registered on AKC, I looked them up.

Pay her! But not all of it before she actually registers the litter and gives you the paper you need to register your dog.

But you don't the papers unless you are planning to do conformation showing.

Yeah, I don't need the papers for sch. I think I may just leave it.

I don't know if the breeder could even register the litter at this point, (how old is your dog?) I'm assuming your dog isn't a puppy anymore, and I know there are time limits on registering.

Do you need Registration to compete in Schutzhund? You can get an PAL reg thru AKC which entails having the dog neutered/spayed, but then not sure you can compete in schutzhund with that type of registration.

At this point, if the dog is older, I wouldn't bother paying the 200$, I'd just go on as I have been or get the dog PAL reg'd.

AKC won't even bother with this...and its actually a common practice for breeders to charge extra for full registration (not saying I agree with it, but I've seen/heard of it many times). The contract says what it says so you can't force her to do anything other than that. AKC doesn't get involved with breeder/owner issues...if they did...they wouldn't have time for all the other stuff they do.

If she hasn't registered the litter...it might be too late, but maybe a breeder can chime in on that. I think you should just try to get the PAL number.

Thanks, I will look into the PAL number. He is just about to turn 6 months, so not too late.
