Default Intact male at the dog park

There is a big sign that no intact males are allowed at our dog park. I have not had my 16 week old pup neutered yet. How long do you think I'm okay bringing him there before I should quit going?

Which dog park? I used to take my furballs to the dog park at Palmer Park.

Usually most people will start getting huffy about it (if they actually care) around the time your pup is 6 months old or a fairly large dog. An unaltered puppy is okay but they dont want fights between males. You'd be amazed at how many people will bring their unaltered in heat females to the dog park hoping an intact male will get her.

I've been going to the one behind Rampart high school. The people there seem really nice and it's close to home. I'll have to try Palmer Park sometime. I forgot about that location.

I'm trying to understand what the feeling in the dog community is on this. I figured a puppy would not mount a bitch in heat, but this is my first male dog so I'm seeking advice from others.

And I don't really have time for play dates but I can usually fit in an hour or so a day when there is a break in my schedule to sneak off to the dog park, but never at set times.

I go to a huge off leash dog park, and while there isn't a sign (keep in mind, my park is about 65 acres) it's "generally" accepted up until the puppies are about 8-9 months old.

That's not to say that there aren't lots of intact males there, there are ... but if the dogs aren't doing anything aggressive, I will usually stick up for the owner of the intact male.

One thing to keep in mind about having an "older" intact male at an off leash park is that YOUR dog might be perfectly well behaved (LMAO at this since it's a puppy LOL) BUT some of the other dogs will sense that he's intact and might try and "start" something.

So it's two fold - how is YOUR intact dog ... and what will he bring out in the OTHER dogs ...

I'm not saying you should neuter him right away, just something to be aware of ... have fun with your pup!

Your pup is 4 months old - I would check the sign to see if they mention when the dog needs to be neutered by. I am guessing they are meaning 6-8 months and not 4 but good on you to try to clarify it. Males get their first big testosterone surge at 5 months from what I've read, but I am imagining that the rule includes females being spayed as well?

Parks around me allow intact males but not females in heat (so an intact female is fine too as long as she's not in heat). I've only seen a female in heat there twice, and the only sign was the crazy way my boy was acting, so we just went home.

The reason for intact males is that many males have a tendency to react negatively to other males. It's intensified when they're intact. The common misconception is that its always intact/intact. But I've seen plenty of intact/non and even non/non and the most surprising is the non/intact. It's kind of an uneducated ban because it really depends on the temperament and training of the dog and not whether or not they have cohones. At my club my boy plays with plenty of intact males just fine and they never have an issue, while other do have issues and get to sit out.

Just watch your boy...make sure he doesn't start acting dominant, and just watch for other dogs to do the same. If the park outright bans it, you will either have to stop going or get him neutered, people will already look at you funny when you bring in a shepherd, and if you're not following the other rules they have they'll like you even less.

Honestly, I would suggest you avoid the Palmer Park dog park. I dont go anymore because there are too many dog fights that happened there and still do. I drive by often because I enjoy going to the overlook and I see alot of the dogs who usually cause problems still going. Stick with Rampart. Or even go to Bear Creek near 8th street. Really as long as things are good at that one, I'd stay there. You already have a feel for the people and the dogs there.
