All of our dogs have been donated from rescue places. Chester our drug dog will be retired soon and I spoke with my captain and asked if I got one if when it was old enough if I could do the narcotics training with him and I could do the k9 stuff he said that I could so thats what I am doing. I work for a smaller department outside Chattanooga which is a bigger city so we get alot of traffic from that but since I work for a department in a higher end area I guess the cheif doesnt have a want to have multiple dogs but ours now doesnt ever work so its going to be time soon for another one and by then ill be able to do it then so as of now he will be my dog until he is old enough to do the training when the department will pickup everything(food, vet, etc.) there are alot of things here that differ from most places
Well, that's a really unusual way of going about it, but I wish you the best of luck. Just don't pin your hopes on him - the washout rate is really high for working dogs, especially donated dogs that come in as very young puppies from unreliable sources. Most departments can't afford to put the time and money into training an officer and a dog that have a high chance of not making it. It is less expensive, in the long run, to pay for a quality dog that's already been trained, or is at least green.
I think I am going to go with the Petmate Indigo it seems to be the best one out of all the igloo styles I looked at. I am looking at the size XL with a door does the size large offer plenty of room for a grown gsd? Thanks for all the input
