How long do you let your dogs stay outside when it is super cold?
My two like being out a lot, have their winter coats and all, but seriously, it was like 5 degrees this morning. We have snow and wind, with the wind making it bitter cold. Of course when it is That cold I am not inclined to go out with them, and my yard is secure so I let them go out alone. They go out to take care of business early, then back out after breakfast to play awhile. Just need to know how long is okay?

My dogs love to be out, as long as they are moving, they don't chill. If we are training and the dog is crated, then he'll come out stiff and shivering because he is just laying in there(in the vehicle, but still chilly)
I'd let them stay out as long as they want, though a wet coat will chill a dog fast and if its snowing heavily, not so great for them(especially a coatie who attracts everything!) |

Usually your dog will let you know.
I live in Ottawa, Canada and it gets REALLY cold here, especially with the wind chill factor. You said it was 5 degrees in Oregon this morning ... There are some days in Ottawa it's -34 (-30 F) and with the wind chill -42 (-45F). And I'm still outside with Kyleigh! Those days we aren't out for 3 or 4 hours (I would freeze to death) ... but at least for a good solid hour or so - as long as she's running, and on these days I take her into the woods, not a field. On our "normal" cold days of -28 (-20F) we are out for 3-4 hours ... again, walking / running ... as long as we are moving. Just mellowing - Ky LOVES to sit on the deck in the icy cold weather. She's great at letting me know when it's time to come in. I checked with my vet and he said as long as she's got a full belly of food ... she's fine for about an hour or so ... EEEKKK to my mind LOL ... but when she's in the backyard just hanging out I stay upstairs so I can monitor her (worry warts that we are!)
