I have 42" wire crates for the house, they have two locks for more security. I have a plastic varikennel for the vehicle. Those have worked fine for my adult dogs...the large varikennel was too small for my adult male, but some dogs fit in them just fine.
my pup was in a crate that could fit a full
grown Great Dane and there was never a problem.
we had the crate for our previous. when that dog
died i used his crate.
I've always used the Great Dane sized crates for home use and the VariKennel 400 for small GSDs and the 500 for the larger guys in the van and on vacation.
We have the extra large Kong wire crates for our shepherds. They come with a removable wire "wall" to make the crate temp smaller and space can be adjusted as they grow to make the crate just the right size. they've worked GREAT.
My wire crate is 36"Lx20"Wx30"H and I'm shopping for a larger one. My puppy is a long and lean 80 lbs. and can just turn around in this crate. I prefer the folding ones, because they're alot more secure than the ones that just clip into place. Mine also has 2 locks on the door.
I've always used the wire crates (folding, two locks) that I think were 40" or 42". With Grim I switched to the Verikennel because he was flown to me in one and he loves it! I got the 42" in that, and I can't fit it into my truck. I plan to get a van for various reasons, though...so that should work.
I have the same setup as Jane, 42" wire crates in the house and Xlarge airline kennels for the car. (Walmart has them for about $80). Even my biggest boy fits comfortably in these.
At last check he was 88lbs. All the rest of our males are in the 75lb range.
I have two 42", a 48" and a 54". The 42" is just fine for Holly and Kaiser but too small for Raven. The 48" is good for her but mostly Raven and Kaiser share the 54".
We now have the Varikennel 500, but growing up she had the small, medium and then the large, cheap Craigslist finds, because I was really not wanting him to have enough room to go to the bathroom in there.
