As I was talking to my sister last night, I was lamenting my lack of success in firmly establishing myself as pack leader amongst my hounds. She suggested she might be able to shed some light on the problem and played back a message I had left on her voice mail. In it, I can be heard leaving her a lengthy explanation of something, during which I stopped long enough to administer this canine admonishment:
“Allie! You’re be punished! Get back on the bed!” Maybe she has a point. Jelpy

When Dolly was about 11-12~weeks old (got her at 9 weeks), I was playing with her at a baseball field while my son practiced. One thing that I noticed was that she was naturally attracted to the coach's yelling. We would be playing and when he yelled a command (to the boys) she stopped in her tracks, ears up, and watched him.
I was astonished that she gave so much attention to the very loud, firm, respected/dominant commands. I don't have to yell at her by any means, but calm, firm, and consistent worked like magic on Dolly.

Jelpy, I'm still laughing at your post .A whole lot of people, including me, who keep their dogs in the house are guilty of talking to them like children instead of like dogs. I said the magic words yesterday "lets go for a walk". Three dogs rushed to the door and just as I reached for the door knob, the phone rang. It was an insurance agent with a list of questions. The dogs all sat down in front of me and started whining. The volume grew until the insurance agent was laughing hysterically and I couldn’t hear her anymore. Of course I snapped “What’s the matter with you dogs, Shut up.” Just like I expected them to understand a single word.

Guilty! I told Felix last night, "I told you to use the bathroom before we went to bed!" as he "click clacked" all across the floor until I got up to let him out.

I'm guilty of saying, "Seriously?" ....as if they'll answer me.
