places to live that don't have breed restrictions

We aren't planning on moving any time soon, but eventually we may have to. College towns really stink when it comes to wages and opportunities. I know most rented apartments and mobile home parks have breed restrictions, but what about owned apartments and town homes? Can HOA's have breed restrictions even if you own a residence or does owning it mean they can't do that?

HOA can have breed restrictions even if you own the property, which is why I would never buy a home that has an HOA. It's best to look around though because all HOA's that has breed restrictions.

Yep, one of my "non-negotiables" when house hunting was *no HOAs*!

Nikon (GSD 9/7/08)

Home repair is so expensive when having to hire someone and my husband doesn't know how to work on houses at all. For that reason, I was considering buying an apartment or town house with an association that handles repairs. I thought maybe we wouldn't have to worry about breed restrictions if we bought an apartment or town home instead of renting, but I guess not. Years ago, I was forced to get rid of a watchdog I loved because of mobile home park rules. The home was purchased on a weekend when the office was closed. When I saw that someone in the park had a white GSD, I wrongly assumed my dog would be allowed (rules had just changed, white GSD owner was protected by grandfather clause). A few months later, I was robbed. God I hate breed restrictions.

I am looking for something that doesn't have an association. Way to many rules for a home that was purchased. In my mind, if I buy a home I will have whatever breed of dog I want, a 6 foot fence, and a swimming pool.

Misty- Samoyed Mix, Tannor- Golden Retriever CGC
Robyn- GSD CGC, TC, Midnite-GSD CGC,TC, Brennan-Golden Retriever CGC, Batman-Husky/Greyhound , Apollo-GSD

I just saw what I wrote and what I meant was 'It's best to look around because all HOA's DON'T have breed restrictions.' I can't stand leaving typos when I write. LOL.

The thing about an HOA is you can read the restrictive covenants before you buy. I don't have an issue with HOA's, only with differential enforcement of the regulations - if you don't like the HOA covenants you can look elsewhere. I know ours has no breed restrictions.
