This summer I will be moving to the DC/MD/VA area. I'm having a hard time finding apartments that allow German Shepherds. It is unbelieveable how many apartments have restrictions on them. I have never heard of this before. Anyone in the area have any suggestion for a place to live that's German Shepherd friendly?

A friend of mine lives in Arlington, and she had a Great Dane in her apartment (he died a few months ago). That apartment building has tons of dogs of all sizes, I was very surprised. I can tell you the address to check out, but be prepared for sticker shock. I think her rent is around $2500/month.

Hey Sammy-- I'm facing the same issue, although I'm looking to rent a house... I may be taking a job in Silver Springs, so I'll keep you posted on anything I find in the area!

It's kind of strange, and I feel hypocritical, but I don't allow dogs in some of my rental units.
I have a few rental properties, and the ones in rural areas I don't mind. But I do have a couple in lower-income areas where bully breeds (and bully breed fighting) are rampant. I'm afraid of the liability...so I keep trying to keep that in mind when I'm trying to find a rental. But yeesh, NO WHERE in the DC area accepts dogs over 30 lbs...

You might get a resume together for Sammy- vet records, any certificates from classes you've taken, letters from your vet about how well behaved Sammy is and what a responsible owner you are. If you haven't taken classes, get a trainer to come and evaluate Sammy and write up a glowing report. Also include some of the cutest and friendliest looking pictures.

Since your moving to the DC area, we have to assume that you can afford it. That being said, as recently as 1 yr ago, 909 at Capital Yards allowed large dogs, and probably still does. Its a nice building and walking distance to the capitol hill neighborhood. The "Navy Yard" subway terminal is less than 100 yards away from the front door as well. I have spent a fairly significant amount of time in that building and in my opinion, its worth it. The only real drawback is you only get one parking spot in the underground garage.
