Default I need to vent - she's studding him out now

Most of you know the story of Knuckles, but I'll give a quick recap. Our vet was contacted by a man with a female GSD that was looking for a male because he wanted a puppy because she made a crappy guarddog. The vet gave him my husband's sister's number. His female was registered, but he didn't care if the male was or not, so long story short - the breeding happened. (they have a WGSD, purebred, no papers) I went to look at the puppies with my sister in law (she got 1st pick of the litter) and fell in love with my Knuckles. No intentions of getting a puppy, but.... well my heart took over.

One of the people that bought another puppy out of that litter contacted my SIL because he has a female that he wanted to breed. My SIL didn't even know what this female looked like or anything.... they bred last week. She told him, "I charge $200 for stud service". He paid it.

NOW! I mentioned to her that I decided Knuckles will be fixed after he's a year old.... she laughs and says, "I'm going to start studding out Thunder by then!". (Thunder is Knuckle's littermate)

I feel guilty that I bought Knuckles - only because of the BYB thing. I knew better, I really did, but thats water under the bridge now. But now she's doing this and it's driving me crazy. She's BRAGGING about it. Boss is a wonderful dog, great temperament and everything, but I think it's flat out wrong to charge for studding on a non-registered dog. I know, even if he did have his papers it doesn't mean he SHOULD breed, thats not the point right now. She doesn't even want to get his papers (she could), why should she when she doesn't need them? (her words) I am amazed that the owners of the females don't care either... it just floors me. She jokingly said I should get a puppy out of this litter so I could have two GSD's and I told her "No, there are a few breeders I've seen online that if I would ever get another, I will fork out the money and get a puppy from them". Her answer? "Why would you do that when you could get one of Thunder or Boss's puppies?"

I'm mainly just venting here... I know my post kind of went all over the place, I'm sorry. I just had to get it out.

Don't worry, venting always helps me. That's absolutely horrid. Sometimes though it's easier to let go than to fight it, and believe me I know how hard THAT is. My dad wanted to breed my old cat because he never bothered to get her spayed. He just wanted to sell some kittens. He got an earful from me on why that was morally wrong (I mean first off, we found her in a box labeled "free kittens" in front of the grocery store. No papers. No health checks. Her brother has had health problems his whole life.). Eventually he decided against it. Thank god. But some people you just can't convince... and it's sad.

I know I can't fight it. She's one of those people that what she thinks is the correct/right way, there is no telling her different. I'm to the point that I try not to talk about the dogs with her now because of all of this (and how she is constantly comparing Thunder to Knuckles... he is much bigger (fatter) than Knuckles. But what's sad is that Thunder doesn't even know how to sit yet..... ).

What is it with people and fat shepherds? The reason I got a new vet with this guy was because my old vet thought a healthy weight for a german shepherd was 130lbs. Um, only if they're abnormally huge!!!

It sucks to be in your position.

Oh jeez, I think I am even MORE appalled that the vet encourage and even enabled such irresponsible breeding by giving the man your sister's number in the first place. Nice.

A friend of mine at work yesterday told me that I should start breeding German Shepherds. She said "all you need is a male and a female, right?".

Uh, no. I proceeded to give a DETAILED description of what goes into being a responsible breeder. She looked at me afterwards and said "that sounds like way to much work". I told her I agree.

I even said something about Knuckles having a waistline and that is what they are supposed to have (like her other 2 GSDs) and she says "yeah, but Thunder is all muscle". Um, ok. Oh.. and I don't feed Knuckles enough either.

This has always bothered me about vets--most of the ones I have worked with tend to tolerate, if not openly encourage breeding. The last vet I worked with had a bulletin board where they allowed people to post "Available for Stud" flyers.

Years ago when I worked for a vet in Oregon, there was a lady with a horrid Cocker Spaniel who asked us to help find a mate for her. The vet asked me to go through the client files and see if anyone owned an intact male. I complied, found two or three equally horrid intact males, called the lady and said "Sorry, we couldn't find a suitable mate for your Cocker."

Why the vet didn't do his dang job and tell the lady why she shouldn't breed her bitch, I do not know. The cynical side of me thinks the vet might have wanted to create more business for himself by making more horrid Cockers with ear, eye, skin, and GI problems.

There's no vets we work with that do not advocate s/n and abhor the practice of "backyard style" "breeding".
They won't even use the term breeder for half the clients they have because of the crap going on.

And if anyone's stupid enough to stud to a non-registered dog, I guess that's just how life is
With your sister's luck her pup will be dysplastic by age 18mos. and need surgery. She'd better save up all her stud fees
