Default Accepted a new job in Houston. . .

So I just accepted a new job in Houston that will pay significantly more than my past and allow me to have more flexible time to spend with Memphis. I'm now looking for a place to live that accepts German Shepherds. So far I have not had very much luck. Anyone have ideas or what have y'all used in the past to help find rentals that will allow GSD's? I'm gonna try the local shelter tomorrow to see if they know of GSD friendly places. Any one have any places in Houston they would recommend?

I don't have any to recommend, but I always recommend checking with the local German Shepherd Rescues. I know the one in Austin tries to keep a list of housing that accepts GSDs for people who call wanting to surrender a dog because they have to move into a rental.

Congrats on the new job!

I'm not sure about rental locations that accept GSDs. You might want to try the surrounding areas as well.

Congratulations to your new job!!! As far as housing..you might want to try calling private individuals for rental properties. They are usually more lenient when it comes to pets.

I would try working with an apartment relocator. They often know which apartments are pet friendly. They can do most of the work for you. I have listed some links below I found that might help. Good luck. Also it might help if you tell us which area of Houston you are looking for an apartment in....

You might get a resume together on Memphis for potential landlords- shot and vet records, a letter from the vet saying Memphis is healthy, well adjusted and you're a responsible owner and one from your current or past landlords saying there was never any damage or complaints. List any training classes you're taken and if you haven't, it would be worth having a trainer come to your house and evaluate Memphis's behavior and write up their opinion. You can ask neighbors and friends to write a letter saying how wonderful and well behaved Memphis is and include some of the cutest, friendliest pictures you have. Congrats on the new job!

I totally agree with this. I have beat many other potential tenants just by getting to know the landlord more about myself. I make it clear to my future landlord that I am a responsible working adult who is quiet and is not someone who likes to stir up any trouble. If you have any certificates for training I would include that with your application. You could even bring your dog with you to meet any new potential landlords. Show off your dog with tricks and how well behaved they are. Just make friends with the landlord. Find a common interest. Maybe you both like hot rods or model building or even stamp collecting. Something. That common ground will go a long way to getting the landlord to bend the rules for someone they consider a friend. If you're desperate you could even offer to put a little more down on the security deposit. Sometimes money talks the loudest.

If you manage to change the landlords mind about having a GSD then make sure that gets reflected in the lease. Getting it in writing will always save your butt in case something changes or the landlord changes their mind 6 months later.
