I've got a cart full of some good books from Amazon, and I want to get "Calming Signals" by Turid Rugaas. The book (used is only $6), the DVD is $38!
I'm leaning towards the DVD, but my question to you who are still up is, do I need both? I'd like to buy these before I go to bed, hope some of you are still up! |

I have the book. I haven't seen the DVD. Why do you need to order it tonight? $38 is a bundle. Maybe you could have your library get it on interlibrary loan? (I'm thinking I look at these a couple of times).

Hmm. Actually, upon some more digging, it appears there are used versions from $17. Some of the reviews say it's not worth it though, that it's basically one 45 minute scene. Plus, someone made a good point about behaviors in real life often occurring in clusters, vs single displays.
Shucks. Now I guess I still don't know whether I want it or not. |

You could always buy the book now and consider getting the DVD later if you don't find the book to be all that helpful. Another book you might like is Brenda Aloff's "Canine Body Language." I have both and like both. I think they go together quite well.

I went with the book. Used. LOL
I've read the Coren book--lengthy, but helps define the reasons behind some behaviours. I wanted to get the Aloff book too, but the cheapest used copy was still $25. I'll wait until I finish the ones I ordered, maybe. |

I have the Calming Signals book, which I think is good. But my ultimate fav is this one:
It is far easier to find the behavior your looking up, as it has a phenomenal index. It's not "calming signals" per se, but ultimately calming signals are extrapolations of specific behaviors.
