Default Difference in Breed? Or individual Dog?

Jax cracks me up. Her reaction to noises or out of the ordinary things is so opposite what our Boxers do. So...which would it be...breed or dog?

Loud noise outside last night. I have no idea what it was other than a "Boom!". The youngest Boxer jumps up and runs to the door barking. She doesn't come back. Just acts like a maniac at the door.

Jax runs to the door. Charges back to me, screaming and howling, to tell me all about it. Runs halfway to the door and turns to see if I'm coming. If not, she comes charging back at me doing her dance until I come check it out with her. I get up and take her to the door, the whole time she's screaming. We go outside and I make her sit on the porch while she's scanning the dark for the noise.

Our Boxers have NEVER, EVER in their entire lives "alerted" us to anything. Jax will run back and forth until we get up and she "shows" us what the problem is.

Breed? Dog?

Exactly!!! The Boxers would be like "look at Timmy in the well, lets just stand here and watch"

And to further crack me up...a couple of weeks ago, Jax came over doing her dance and screaming. I thought she had to go out so I got up and headed for the door. She stopped half way there and wouldn't go any further. Completely confused on what she may want I said to her "Show Me!". She walked right over to the dog crate, where the cat was locked in eat, and tagged it with her nose. She got me out of my chair just to let the cat out so she could lick up whatever he left!

My dogs come and tell me too. Might be a breed thing.

Kaos likes to alert as well....it is usually nonsense...but there have been occasions I am very thankful for. When my middle boy was about 2 we had just moved to StL. My husband was out of town...long story short, my very bull headed 2 yr old had woke up, got a chair, unlocked the back door and let himself into the back yard to play @ 2 am in a thunderstorm. Kaos was screeching, licking my hands, and finally jumped up on the bed and digging the covers off of me. I said "show me" and he bolted down the stairs and to the garage door. I was shocked, horrified and very thankful for Kaos. Needless to say I couldn't go back to sleep, next day we had a locksmith install hotel locks on top of the doors and a security company put in an alarm....but Thank goodness for Kaos!!

I watched a GSD tattle on Jax to his owner when she went behind the counter of the vet's office. He knew she wasn't supposed to be there. It was hysterical!

Breed? Dog?

The GSD is definitely a team player, as are most of the herding breeds. It is what makes them good at working with people at a task.

My collie's never alerted me to anything. One from a pretty good working line. One a show line and the other a BYB. So, is it really a herding breed thing?
