I'm interested in reading more on dog training (in addition to the classes I'm taking with my dog). I've read Ian Dunbar's "Before/After You Get Your Puppy", "How to Speak Dog" (Stanley Coren), "The Other End of the Leash", Patricia McConnell. I'd like to read "Calming Signals" also, only available online here. Another one I'm considering is "Control Unleashed". So I'm going to be ordering from Amazon.
Do you have a favorite book you've read? Favorite training or trainer/behaviorist? What did you gain most by reading it? On the flip side, do you have a book you hated? Thought was a waste of time? |

There are a few that I have checked out from the library. I don't consider either of them bad....but they did both seem to echo each other in everything. Went to Barnes and Nobles to get some...and I scanned a few pages of each book. uh, they seemed to pretty much echo each other. I think one person wrote a book and a million other just recopied his/her book.
I did like a few of the Leerburg books. For training anyway. Haven't tried the other ones. So I am interested in what answers you get, Rocketdog. |

Silvia Trkman. She doesn't have any books but plenty of free info on her website/blog and several DVDs.

Jetscarbie, apparently I'm not getting a lot of anything, LOL. Thank you to those who replied.
I was thinking of some Karen Pryor, Jennifer Bridwell, Jan Fennell stuff. I've read some stuff on Leerburg.com, but it seemed to me that all I kept getting asked to do was buy the cd and manuals for $XX!! Agile, is it Tarkman? I will check it out. Bellamia, why the old version, especially when the Monks themselves have discredited some of it? |

I like this one. It's somewhat old school (no clicker, but nothing extreme either), but good and sound. It has quite a bit about how human emotions/thoughts are involved with dog interactions and training.

This is not a book but on Netflix...there is a video called "Dog's Decoded" that is very good. Not so much about training but good anyway. There's also a member that post youtube's on here of a guy that trains dogs. Wonderful. Sorry I don't remember who it is.....but the guy is semi-young and he is pretty good at training dogs. His videos are easy to understand and follow. I wish I remembered who it was???????????? |
