Ok it's been three days since Spinner passed and we have been busy taking Chewy for walks and playing keeping him occupied when it comes to Eating breakfast/dinner he doesn't want to eat. We put some wet or turkey stock on his dinner but takes a few bites then walks away. Is this the start of depression because he doesn't have his dinner mate with him anymore? Please let me know so that we can make chewy happy and eat.

I wouldn't change too much in the feeding thing. He does miss his dinner partner, but the biggest change has unfortunately all ready has been done with the passing of Spinner. That's a massive change in his environment. It will effect him for awhile.
It's sadly just going to take time; and on the dog's time (not ours) to get past that. I would just give him about fifteen minutes to eat then pick the bowl up. He will come around. I wouldn't change too much of the routine as far as feeding goes and I would just act like nothing is different so he could pick the cues up from you folks. I would if I was going to change anything maybe add yogurt (plain) as it's good for dogs and it'd be a permanant thing. Watch the sodium in chicken broth unless you make it yourself. Trader Joes has a very low sodium broth; everything else is astronomically high. Take Care, and good luck. |

I watched a documentary on wolves. Some guy fenced in huge acreage and lived with a pack for a while. He, his wife and daughter essentially had real wolves as companions, really cool. At one point a hunter/jerk got into the enclosure and shot one of the wolves. The rest of the pack mourned for a week or two. Didn't eat, didn't hunt, didn't do anything. Got to the point the dude shot an elk and gave it to the wolves but they didn't eat even then. Guess it's normal for dogs to go without food when the situation changes radically like that.

Thank you all. I made the turkey stock myself so there is no salt at all. I took chewy for a walk he enjoyed that. took our time walking and sniffing. I guess he is mourning Spinner so I will let him have his time and just monitor is behavior too. I also was checking out GSD rescue they have some pups there(white) but not yet I figure we will wait a tad bit befor we add to the family. I'll keep you posted on Mr.man and let you know what is happening. Thanks again.

I'm sorry to hear about Spinner passing.
When of my parents dog died the other 3 really seemed to mourn this loss..some more than others. One female seemed to go on a hunger strike..of course she eventually ate. They buried her in the yard and the one who wouldn't eat would leave her toys on her grave...it was really weird. Give Chewy time... |
