I'm not sure where to post this...feel free to move if necessary, mods.
This is a temperament issue, one that I am really not used to. Thankfully, these are not GSDs...they are pittie/american bulldog mixes. There are three of them. They are all shy and noise phobic, but one in particular is pretty bad. They are fostered by a family member of my SO due to their owner dying recently. I don't see the dogs everyday, but I got to spend some time with them yesterday. There are three of them, but they can only keep one. 1 in particular has a terrible temperament...a total nerve bag. I feel bad for this dog. He ran from me the 2nd time I went to go play with all the dogs, so I decided to work with him in particular. He will never get adopted like that. The dogs have had over a week to adjust, but I don't think its that anyway. For example, here is how our walk went: I say hi to him, and he is friendly but shy. I have the leash, and after a few minutes manage to clip him onto it. He was walked on a leash before. As I walked to the gate, he freaked out. he tried to run away from me like I was the boogeyman. He kept running around a sapling, so I carefully and slowly went away from it. That calmed him down a little. I knelt down and didn't look at him. 1 of his brothers came up so I petted him, which made the leashed dog more comfortable. Finally, we were on our way. He was showing slight anxiety, and finally figured out he was free from the other dogs in the backyard. He relaxed. He was very, VERY into other barking dogs. He never pulled on the leash though. He walked right by my side, and let me pet him and talk to him. This dog is terribly noise phobic. He almost scared the stripes of his brindle self: walking through leaves, when a car drove by with a loose exhaust, a barking GSD in someones front yard, a shopping cart. He also stared at a few people as if not sure what to do. Not aggressive, though. The positives: He didn't spook at every car, he didn't spook at two kids with noisy toys, he walked right by my side. Very responsive to baby talk. By spook, I mean bolt. Bolt, hit the end of the leash and buck and squirm before stopping and looking at the object in fear. I have never, ever had to deal with this before. Something vaguely like it when my female GSD was a puppy and going through a fear period...but it doesn't hold a candle to the way this dog is noise phobic. |
