Default Escape act! (need suggestions)

last night my husband took Wolf out back to do his business before we went to bed. he hooked the dog up-we have a 50ft superduper cable thing that clips to his d ring collar with one of these http://www.chinawholesaletown.com/wh...eb_up_file.jpg
but we didn't get a cheapo one, i just pulled that up for a pic cause i don't know what they're called. we got a super strong one that's meant for hauling/towing stuff....anyways, where i live there aren't any street lights so it's pitch black out. Wolf, being a working line dog blends in with the night lol. my husband hooked up Wolf, let him be and went to the car to go grab something (Wolf was still in sight and not far at all). somehow, the dog unhooked the clippy thing and took off running. he would NOT come back at all for anything. he didn't break it, he unhooked it. my husband said he was SURE it was clipped on all the way, he even tugged it before letting go. my husband went to grab him, but Wolf is too fast. we tried running in the opposite direction so he'd chase us-didn't work. he wouldn't come when called. he wouldn't come with treats. he ran all over the nighborhood and at one point we thought he was gone for good (there's thick woods behind our house). we finally got him, but i was terrified. if anything ever happened to him i would just die.
anyway, when we went to see a trainer a few weeks ago, he had a hook that looked similar to the one i showed you, but it had a special clip thing on it that was pretty dog proof (i can't ask the trainer cause he's awful and after being there fo 30minutes i wanted to run away lol). does anyone know what they're called or where i can get one? does anyone have any other clip suggestions that are doggy proof? Wolf is VERY smart-he can unplug the vacum with his paws cause he doesn't like it, he can open/close a baby gate without us even hearing it, we bought a trashcan with a special slamp down/button release lid so he wouldn't get in it but sure enough he figured that out too!

I guess I'd work on recall really hard even more than worrying about a super-duper clip. ? Sort of sounds like he's never had offleash time and went drunk with his newfound freedom

I'm sorry, I can't suggest a better containment idea, I'm sure someone will come along with something.

Bump!

is usuing/teaching recall.

I like how people dont train there dogs. they just want to tie them out, keep them leashed at all cost then boast about how they have a trained well behaved animal.( not singling out any one person we ALL are at fault) then when something happens they want to know of a better way to tie them. the better way is to TRAIN TRAIN TRAIN! everyday 3 times a day for 5min its not hard or time consuming. accidents dont happen on a leash or in a crate. I hate to say it but when things like that happen you cant just use positive reinforcment. alfa males in the wild dont chase and the reward after they come back they fight!!! a dog can love you and not respect you!!!!! my advice is get an e coller and work on recall long line then off leash. Still not singling anyone person out!

Work on recall, not on a secure way to tie the dog.

Is there a reason you can't TAKE him out to do his 'business'? Why do you PUT him out?
Since you have to put him out, good luck finding a proper clip.
Also, since you are putting him out, maybe you could watch him to see what he is doing
to get loose. Use a flashlight to keep him in sight.

ok even the best trained dogs sometimes don't listen. my pup is in training, but it doesn't happen overnight. he has had LOTS of off leash time, he has NEVER done this before. he usually listens, this is a first time offense. he wasn't left out alone, my husband was less then 10 feet from him and turned his back for a second. you can't tell me you're perfect and never let your dog out of your sight for a second. if you do, you're lying to yourself. no one is perfect, we all do the best we can and accidents happen. there's nothing wrong with working on finding a better more secure way of keeping your dog on lead as an extra precaution to protect your dog. i'm not going to get a shock collar to shock him into listening. that's cruel.

I would try using the clip/tie out during the day while you're able to watch and monitor him. Only until you think it is 100% secure should you try it without supervising him.

That being said if there are thick woods behind your house then there's probably coyote. I personally wouldn't feel comfortable leaving him unsupervised, and especially on a tie-out, at night by himself as he'd make for an easy target.

he wasn't left unattended. i'd never leave him outside by himself.
