So, my SO's mom has a 10 month old Pomeranian (Lola). She's kept mostly outside, gets very little human contact, zero training and is just left to her own devices. Whenever we're over, we make it a point to spend time with her, just loving on her and trying to train. She's VERY smart and very well behaved, especially with all things considered.
Anyways, SO and I are thinking about asking his mom to surrender her to us....we have the time, space and funds, plus her and Sheldon get along great. However, neither of us are really Pom people, and don't really WANT her...we just want her out of that situation asap. It's a waste of a GREAT dog. We're also afraid to foster her until we find her a family, as that could take ages. People in my town that get poms and chis don't walk, train or socialize, and the dogs turn into little menaces. so basically, we'd probably be stuck with her for a year or more..... =/ |

I know you say you aren't "Pom people", but you'd be surprised how charming those little dogs can be, and a nice one will turn you around.
Since she hasn't been coddled or doted on, she's likely to be a better candidate for training than the typical spoiled ankle-biter. I say go for it, take her on and make her into a lovely, well-behaved pet, and then find a family worthy of her... if you even want to part with her by then. I have known some awsome little Poms with temperaments to die for.

Haha, it's funny you say that. Last night, she was kinda winning us over...it's just strange, as I've never had little dogs (though I think pom's are freaking cute....they look like little foxes), and he's more into herding dogs. This could be a fun little challenge. I'm just a little hesitant...especially with sheldon's food guarding....and, yet again, this could help him get over that....so much back and forth...xD

it doesn't sound like she would be much of a problem, you might learn to love her and not feel like you were stuck with her for the time it takes to find her a good home (are ther pom boards like this shepherd board?), and you might well decide she's a joy to have around. and the feeling you get when you help a dog have a better life is pretty awesome.
re the food guarding thing...you can always separate or crate when feeding.

If I were you, I'd take her just to get her out of that situation. I agree that she will grow on you.
![]() I hated cats and thought they were useless animals, but now that I have 2 kittens I absolutely love them! I surprised myself. |

I have four of these creatures in my house, and I still had to use a mousetrap to catch the mouse in the kitchen. Useless, the lot of 'em!! I used to think toy dogs were useless, but if raised and trained like normal dogs, they can be a joy to have around. They may be "useless" in utilitarian terms, but so what? Human babies are pretty useless too, but people really seem to like them.

The feeling I get just thinking about giving her a better home is great...apparently SO has been thinking about it a lot too. He really likes her, and it's not that much extra food to feed a day. Quote:
Now to just convince his mom to let us take her... |

A friend of mine has the sweetest Pom. It is a very loving little thing and also never has had any training whatsoever. It's not a yippy yappy dog at all. If you think your dog and this one can live in harmony (minus seperating for food and maybe water,) you should do it.
