My Mom and my brother live in Florida. I really have no family here. I have gone to Florida every year since Mom and Dad went down there 6 years ago, this being the second Christmas since Dad has passed away.
Along comes Viktor. I already had all my arraignments made for my Christmas trip before he was rescued. It is making me sad that I have to kennel him for 4-5 days while I am away, but it is what it is. At least it is the same kennel where I day-care him, so it will be familiar to him. Also, he seems to like the people that work there and I take extra-good care of them, to take extra-good care of him. But still… I hate to leave him for that long.

Don't feel sad. He truly doesn't realize that it's a special holiday. He'll know the folks at the kennel and I'm sure they'll be extra nice to all the animals in their charge.
Have a great trip!

We kenneled our three last spring when we went to Tn to visit family. I wish we could of taken them but no room with the kids traveling with us. They did fine. The hardest part was finding a good kennel to leave them at.

I know he doesn't realize it's Christmas... it's more just that I have to leave him that long.
He goes to Rosedale Kennel. Welcome to Rosedale Kennel

i know it's hard, we just picked up Josh on Monday after having to kennel him for 3 days for a short family trip. We hadn't left him at all since he was 8 weeks old (he's almost 16 mo now). I think he handled it better than I did, I missed him a lot!

We don't kennel. I hire a house/pet sitter and pay for 3 visits with walks per day. Really, it ends up cheaper than a kennel ($50 per day) and the pets don't mind.
This way, my kid Brother comes by the house as well (he works nearby) and mooches food from the larder and plays with the pooches as well. Wendy is young - so things will be a little different - I may have to set up 4 visits and longer play times - but still cheaper than 2 cats, 2 dogs, 5 parrots and an iguana in a boarding kennel!

I know what you mean...I just got Lena on Nov. 27 and I have to leave her at Christmastime. Whether I board her with previous owner/breeder, who knows her and will take great care of her, or got a pet sitter, I would still be sad about leaving her for a week. I'll miss her and I know she will miss us!

Aww, we own a boarding kennel and we always give the dogs staying over Christmas a stocking LOL. I'm sure they don't know the difference, but my dogs celebrate Christmas with me (gifts and a stocking haha) so I'd feel bad if the kennel dogs didn't, I'm sure your dog will be well taken care of, and comfy since he knows them already, we have some dogs that run right in when they come, but I know it's hard leaving them.

I never leave any more but when I did I always left my dogs with my trainer. They were treated like family members and allowed to stay "upstairs" with the family. I called in for reports all the time and they emailed me pictures. I was usually never gone for more than a week but I couldn't stand not checking in on them. The live pictures they sent helped. I did miss them a lot. Now I just never leave if I can't take them with me.
