There is nothing wrong with going with a breeder, and the one that offers training sounds interesting. Are they going to train it, or are they offering training classes -- training classes where you work with your dog sounds like your best bet.

Please ask if the sire and dam have been tested for VonWilbrand's disease.

They are providing obedience classes and you bring your dog and go through the class with them. Although I'm not sure if it works the same way at the higher levels (they do police training and drug detection training and family protection training and stuff - hubby likes the idea of the family protection training down the road) but yes, we'd definitely want to do the classes with the dog so that we feel comfortable that he would do what we say.

And I definitely have that question on my list. LOL. One of the first things I'll be asking, I'm sure.

It is not an expensive test. When you ask them, if they say they haven't ask if they will. I test for it, but I know some people who say that it is not that prevalent in shepherds. If you ask her to test for it, and explain that you lost a dog this way, they may go ahead with it even if it is not something they normally check for.

You can have a dog tested for von Willebrands if you're concerned about it. Bianca is a blood donor and that was one of the things the hospital tested her for before she was accepted into the blood donor program.
I have a type of von Willebrands myself, but it's a mild form so I mostly just bruise really easily.
