They're still pups, so i understand that they are going to be playful, but its getting so out of hand! I only have ac in my living room, the crates are in the dog's own room, and we are having an out of season heat streak! its been 90 for the past few days, with high New Hampshire style humidity. So, i've had the two and the foster all hanging out in the living room with me. The foster is awesome, he just lays down on the couch and relaxes. Meanwhile, aschen and stauba are rambling around, jumping on eachother, chewing on eachother's necks...its driving me nuts. I really dont want to crate either of them, i'd just like them to hang out peacefully (not only when its hot, it'd be cool to hang out with them all the time!). How do i correct this behavior? Its really too hot to take them out and tire them, i take them for a walk right after work when it is still cool(7 am), to try and tire them out, however, it never seems to work lol. Is it inevitable at this point because of their ages ( 11 and 8 months old)? Rough play is fine in the yard, but a bit of a pain in the living room beside you!

Bring in one dog at a time and put them on opposite sides of the room, make them lay down and calm down. Then once they understand that house means calm and outside means play they should be better.
My friend and I are doing the same thing with her two dogs. We bring in her Lab mix, Indy, first and get her to lay on her bed and calm down, then we bring in her Pit Bull and make him lay down and calm down. We've been doing this for about two weeks and already we're noticing that they are a lot calmer in the house than they have been. Now when they see each other in the house they know to be calm and when they see each other outside they know that they can play. It might also help if you have two separate beds for them to lay on. It'll help them clam down it they have a place that they go to to calm down. For Dodger I have a bed that he lays on when he needs to calm down. Now when we starts getting over zealous in the house he goes and lays on his bed to calm down then when he's calm he gets to get up.

If you can't exercise their bodies, tire out their brains with an indoor training session. Puzzle toys, clicker training, start teaching them to do scent work etc. There are all sorts of ways to tire out a dog besides running them around outside.

Oh I hear you! Lakota thinks Kiya is her own personal chew toy. One day my trainer asked me if I let the dogs play in the house, I said yes. Well I have since learned why she doesn't let her dogs play in the house. I started making them tone it down in the house, they can chew, play with toys but no ruff housing. As soon as they start getting ruff I interfere. The worst is when I break them up, a lot of times the older one is the one that goes back for more.

The biggest concern I would have in this situation is that every time they rough house indoors they are learning that it is ok to do so. Once this association that it's ok to play rough inside is made, and the behavior habituated, it becomes much harder to break.
We always start from day one teaching our pups that indoors is the quiet, calm place. We don't play with them rough inside, or allow them to do so with the other dogs. That sort of play is only allowed outdoors. I know in some weather conditions it's difficult to get them outside to burn off the energy, but it's important to do. Things that exercise the mind like find it games, puzzle games, tracking, obedience, etc... also go a long way in helping tire out the dog, physically as well as mentally. Then make sure to have lots of items indoors that give the dogs a reason to settle down and be calm... like chew toys, marrow bones, stuffed kongs, whatever. Each pup gets sent to a different spot and given some goodie that will keep him/her occupied for a while, and that helps habituate the correct, calm and settled, indoor behavior. If they do get riled up in the house, then outside to play, or grab the gear and do a short obedience session to give the energy a constructive outlet, or into the crate for a while to settle down.

i was actually just doing obediance with stauba before i checked this! lol. Thank you for great responses.
marrow bones are great, but after a little, they decide they want the one the other has, aschen (tricky fella...) will drop his and ignore it, wait till stauba gets up, then steal hers, then realizes his was better (now that she has it) and will repeat this over and over...but they do work for a little while :-). Aschen has never shown much interest in kongs.....i should try with stauba, do you think i need a better treat? |
