Before adopting?
What do you like best about this dog? What do you like the least about it? What health checks has it had? What training? What else?

I think it depends on what is important to you.
Do you have kids? Do you do any sports with your dogs? Do you have cats? Territorial? Any resource guarding? When I've fostered I've looked for 1) Reactions to strangers while out 2) Reactions to ppl entering the house 3) Cats 4) Kids 5) Resource guarding 6) Crate trained 7) Any training - this would be the least important to me if I was adopting 8) How quickly they learned 9) Reactions to moving objects like bikes, cars, lawn mowers And a whole lot of other stuff that you just notice at the time. |

Any temperament testing...
What has it been exposed to... What has it been eating... Daily routine... Crate training... Good with kids, cats, other dogs... Any people issues... List of words used for the dog (ie, off instead of down)... Favorite treats and toys... Runner risk? Fence jumping risk? I like to do this thing for fosters: http://www.volhard.com/uploads/drives-2010.pdf Car manners... Foreseeable transition issues (including diarrhea).... I also like to have a couple of meetings with the adopter and the dog so that they can watch how the dog reacts to things and if I have a good method they can use it.

Thanks! My sister is looking at a rescued dog in foster care and she's relying on my advice since I have dog experience. I've told her lots of obvious things to look for, and I gave her a temperament test to do.
But there were some ideas here that I totally didn't think of. This is very helpful.

I really like the canine personality profile. Thank you.

I have had some people attempt to do really WEIRD things to dogs I have been responsible for. They may ask to see whatever they wish, and they can say what they would like to do themselves. As long as it's ok'd, they can have at it. |
