Why are you asking this on a German Shepherd board? Even though there are very knowledgable people here and some even have the breeds you suggested ... I think you'd be better off addressing this issue with Golden Retriever and Mal boards.
There's also alot more to choosing a dog breed that needs to be addressed per individual family. Some people would do great with either breed, others would not fair well at all.

lol I ended up with half a post again..
ok, those are 2 very different breeds of dogs. what about each one does she like? what doesn't she like? does she have a fenced yard? I don't know about malamutes, but huskies are runners. I assume that malamutes would be also. |

Of course you can start by asking here first before going elsewhere for more detailed information.
I think that breed rescues often have good information on their sites without the sales pitch (as much). http://www.iamra.org/aboutthealaskanmalamute.htm http://www.malamuterescue.org/article/index.html I have a friend who does Malamute rescue and they call their yard Malcratraz, have had to replace toilets that the dogs have destroyed, etc. But they love them! http://www.grrow.org/grrowi/educatio...on/default.asp

Any dog can be aggressive..they all have teeth and they don't have the ability to reason. Socialization, genetics, handling, and environment all play into that sort of stuff.
From my experience, goldens are more of the totally stupid for their people, will do anything, easy breezy type of dogs. Mals, in typical northern breed fashion, are going to be a lot more of a challenge. Mals are probably a more hardier breed, goldens are prone to things like cancer, tumors, and a lot don't age very well.

in my experience Goldens are very needy and Malmutes are very independent, real different breeds.

You also have to think of the hair, if you think Shepherds blow their coats try a malamute. Malamutes don't usually get along with other animals, they can be stuborn, but all of mine have been cuddlers and I love when they get howling. are your friends interested in sledding or skijoring
