We started trial runs with Lily at 1 year old to see how she handled it. I always wanted to see where she was sleeping while we were gone and would try to sneak up to a window to see her before she knew we were home...never worked though. Imagine that, not being able to sneak up to a house with a GSD inside
![]() But she's never gotten into anything since we started leaving her out. That was over a year ago so we even put up the crates and she has free roam of the whole house. She doesn't get access to the fenced in backyard while we are gone though because I don't want to risk it and she tends to bark at neighbors and I don't want her becoming a nuisance.

Gia has always had complete freedom of our home. The question in her case would be when she stopped tearing stuff up... which was around 1yr.
With Tilden I tried to go uncrated for a couple months and it didnt work out... So I started crating @ 1yr and started leaving him out for an hour or two at a time at exactly a year and a half. I was advised not to count my chickens or hold my breath, but he's been perfect ever since!! If you're just asking about overnight - both of my dogs have always had complete freedom at night. They just don't leave my room. [i'll also note that i got both of them btwn 9&10mos]
