My GSD is almost 11 months old. I have hired a trainer to come to my house and train me on how to train my dog (this is my first dog and I quickly realized I don't have a clue how to train). Anyway, my pup, Loki, has never barked at anyone before. He has a voice though, he yips when I leave him. When the doorbell rings he runs to the door wagging his tail and gets excited to play with the person coming over. My trainer was concerned that he doesn't bark when a stranger is around the house, especially being his breed. As a woman who lives alone I like having the dog as protection-though I have doubts he would protect me if something were to happen based on his behavior. My trainer suggested training him to bark when someone comes to the house to alert me and deter a break in. I just don't want a dog that barks all the time. Does anyone have opinions if I should train him to bark? Maybe it's because he's still a puppy?
