Separation Anxiety?

This the first time I've ever owned a GS. His name is Cash and he's about 8 months old. Since we got him at 9 weeks he never leaves our side, always follows us everywhere so when we need to go some place that we can't bring him he freaks out! Even if my husband and I just step outside and he can see us through a window he starts whining and pawing until he breaks something or tears it up. As a puppy we tried to crate train him but he would freak out and it never got any better. Is this just a phase? Will he calm down when he gets older or is this something I need to try to train out of him?

You need to train him. Begin desensitizing him to you and family members leaving. If you don't know how to do this you can look it up or you can ask me and I'll give more details.
