Default Chewing Rocks

I have a 4 month old GSD and he is obsessed with rocks. He gets them from my gravel driveway or he digs them up in the back yard. He will cry if he cannot dig a rock up. Once he gets the rocks he chews on them. I don't think he swallows any of them, but the rocks have chipped all of his baby teeth. I cannot get him to stop digging up and chewing on rocks. I don't want him to ruin all of his teeth and/or swallow rocks and need surgery because of it. Has anybody else had this problem? Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

That is a bad habit. I don't have much advice, hopefully some of the trainers will chime in. Mine ate a huge rock 3 weeks after we got him, we were in the ER and cost me a ton of money WITHOUT surgery. We were vigilant and made sure he stayed away from the grave in my yard. He is 6 months now and has no interest in the rocks.

Have you provided him with other things to chew on? Something that has flavor? I would go with raw marrow bone for him, or anything that would taste better than the rocks. He should learn there are better things to chew on then rocks.

Much of it will be management. Since he enjoys chewing on them, it is a self-rewarding behavior. Keep an eye on him constantly in any area he has access to rocks. Try to keep him engaged with you with a game or training when he's in the backyard or any area he may find a rock. If he does get one, remove it and redirect him to an appropriate chew or toy. Work on leave it with him and start working on leaving rocks alone. I had to do this with mine and Kleenex. It takes a while, but if you are vigilant, remove anything he gets a hold of, and work it as a leave it, you will be successful. Mine won't even look at Kleenex now. It just takes some work.

I put my 5 month boy on a lunge line so I can get to him easily if he chews on a rock. i started giving him ice cubes which seems to help.
