Dog has started barking when entering garden??

Lately my 18 month male german shepherd has started barking really loud and aggressively when he goes out in the garden to do the toilet which hes never done before. When I let him out his hackles will be raised his tail will be up and the teeth will be bared and he will growl and bark for about 30 seconds, he has never had any bad expierances in garden this has just started happening the past week and if anything is in the garden like birds cats ect will be chased out. is this behaviour normal? and how can I stop him?

Ours started doing this too. Its spring, so he is even more excited about the birds and squirrels. I started taking him out on a leash. and release him after he sits and looks at me. This has greatly reduced the barking and growling, he still barks and rushes at the birds after I release him, but I figure hey, a dog has got to have its fun.

I am curious though if anyone more experienced has anything else to say about this.

Maybe you have a nightly visitor to your garden that you never see but your dog can smell. Possums, raccoons, rats, etc all travel through at night leaving their smell. Raina can smell them and goes crazy tracking where they were in the yard when she goes out in the morning. At times she will bark, even when there is nothing apparent to me but when I go and look with a flashlight its always some wild animal up in a tree. One night a raccoon fell out of the tree right in front of her. She was so surprised she took a moment to react and that is probably what saved the raccoon. It gave me a chance to run over and tell her leave it and grab her collar. She still got a couple scratches on her nose but she is fine. We have no cases of rabies here at all so not worried on that point. Go out with a flash light and check it out, I bet you find something or tracks that something passed through.

Most likely a critter. There maybe be one burrowed in the garden somewhere. It's Spring and the critters are busy.

Rusty had a garter snake hissing at him the other day:rolleyes:

Our 16 month does the same thing on occasion, for her it seems to be related to certain smells. She hates the smell of chemicals, and she will do this if one of the neighbors has something unusual. She used to do this in her puppy fear stages as well and more frequently if there were odd sounds (heavy tools, lawn equipment, etc) that she wasn't used to. And it could last for a day or two depending on what was going on.
