Behavior with baby goat - question
The other day I introduced Ammi to a 4-day-old baby goat. Ammi is a 3 year old GSD, and she has had one litter.
I told her the goat was a BABY and to be gentle. She sniffed and snuffled and nosed and licked that baby goat all over, then she started to chatter and drool like a male dog smelling a female in heat.
What is this behavior? Is it simply excitement? Conflict between prey/maternal drive?
Ammi has had some experience with herding. I've had her at my place since last summer. She's seen and sniffed our goats but hasn't been in with them, or done any herding with them. Mainly she just ignores them, but this baby really turned something on! Any ideas?
I think you can replace "baby goat" with "baby" and read some threads from that recent subject. Of course ignore the advice of re-homing the dog!!
Hope they can become friends though.
I'd replace baby goat with "cat" and look here:
Just to be clear, I'm not asking how to introduce a dog to a baby goat.
I'm curious about the drooling and chattering behavior, as I've never seen it in this context before.
I'm guessing it's just an arousal response? I'd think it was prey drive leaking, but she was being very gentle with the baby goat, and her sniffing and licking seemed almost motherly. I'm sure there must be some conflict going on in her dog brain.
Sounds like all you need to do is monitor to make sure she doesn't hurt the goat. :)
