Sudden change in behaviour
Joey is 17 months old now, he's well housetrained and usually behaves well when left alone at home. I have had a nightmare week in which he has destroyed the kitchen and some carpets 3 days out of 5. My neighbour has knocked on the door with a delivery and mentioned that her bitch is in her first heat. Could this be causing joey to act out in this way? I'm baffled to understand otherwise!

Males will go to great lengths to satisfy their biological urge to mate. A neighbor with a bitch in heat is a powerful attraction. It would not surprise me in the least if this is the cause of the sudden change in behavior. He's plenty old enough to have great interest in this subject.

How often will a bitch be in heat? Also any advice for anything I can do to calm joey or else my house is going to be completely destroyed! He's in tact at the moment and we are arranging for him to be done, will this help do you think?

From what I have read female dogs will go into heat about every 6 months. I've never had to deal with this personally but a good friend had an intact male and female pit bulls. When she came into heat one time he broke his teeth on his cage trying to chew his way out to her--he was that frantic about it. Neutering your intact male should solve the issue. Another suggestion is wearing him out so he's really tired. A tired dog is a happy dog.

Also keep in mind that even after he is neutered, it will be a good 6 months before his testosterone levels will be completely down. We just went through a heat period with my female, and my male, who was neutered nearly a year ago, was still very interested (it didn't help that she was nearly throwing herself at him, lol). I have seen males neutered for years who still show interest in females in heat. It is no where near the level it would be if they were entire, but still there, nonetheless. Take hope, though--after the deed is done and his hormones settle down, I doubt that he will try and tear your house apart trying to get to your neighbor's female.
