One Owner Dogs???

Talking with my Mother on the phone last night she made a comment that seemed inaccurate to me. She claimed that GSDs are "one owner dogs" ie they align themselves with one particular person.

I told her I thought GSDs (of good temperament as with any breed) are family/pack oriented dogs. Meaning, they love everyone in the family.

What do you guys think?

I think it depends upon the environment the dog is raised in and how he/she has been socialized.

Lisl is a one person dog because I live alone and I don't get much company.

I have had or been around one owner dogs, shepherd and other breeds. The GSD's that I've been around that were one owner dogs, were mainly more neurotic females. I don't think I'll probably ever own another female GSD. My dad's GSD when I was a kid was like that...she was his dog. she tolerated the rest of us, but she loved my dad.

I am married with six kids ranging from 8 to 16 and have 2 gsd's. Diego is 1 1/1 years and Bandit is 6 months. With out a doubt they love each and everyone of us fully "but" they definitely do bond to one person more then others. I don't know if its a "alpha" thing or what but everyone in the house calls them my shadows. I move, they move.

The only dog I've had experience with being a "one owner dog" was a chow mix my ex brought home from his animal clinic job. He took him everywhere and spent time with him at home while I was working. I was pregnant and our dog hated me. Well hated if I got within about 3 feet of my ex husband anyway. He ended up re homing him. It was upsetting. I did love my little Trouble and it turned me off from wanting another dog for over 10 years.

Both Lola and Harry (Harry more so) are mine.

They are very close to my husband and son, however they are definitely my dogs and the reason why is probably because I feed, train and groom them, we all exercise them.

We've had GSDs since 1986, and are on #4 & #5 together - every single one of them has picked a "special" person between the two of us. For all of our females (4), my husband has been that person. Keefer, our only male, is totally, 100% my dog. But he also adores Tom, and Tom adores him. It's just that Keef is my shadow, he always knows where I am and what I'm doing because he keeps me constantly in sight. If I leave a room, he follows. Always.

I do all the feeding, grooming, vet visits, and training, so it's certainly not about that. Halo loves me too, she seeks me out for affection frequently, and we race in flyball together so she works very well for me, but if she had to choose between us, she'd chose him. Total Daddy's girl. :)

They know their pack and love us all but they do tend to pick one special person who gets extra loves. At least mine have.

my dog runs to the door and greets every member of the family no matter what time it is or what he is doing. everyone gets a tail wag and a good sniffing. i mean they definitely have a "favorite" but i see gsds more as pack animals then one person dogs.

Oskar's Human 02-24-2014 10:50 PM

Okay so far everyone thinks that they bond with one person more intensely but in general seem to love everyone else in the family. That being said, do you think that is a GSD thing or just a Dog thing?

(If you are reading this and haven't responded to the OP feel free to disregard this one or include your answer to this as well)
