My rescue dog 3 questions

MY family and I adopted our 2 year old german shepherd in the spring of 2013. As far as we can tell she was never socialized or trained well with her first family. She's happiest while going on long hikes and backpacking trips, she's great meeting new people but she always growls and barks at the other dogs on the trail. I'm just wondering if there's a way to get her more comfortable with other dogs around? She seems fearful of them but she looks big and scary to the other dog's owners. Also, she jumps on people (in a friendly way) when they come to our house-she's way to big to be doing that but won't obey commands easily when others are around. Lastly, sometimes she barks when people aren't paying attention to her, any way to curb this behavior at this point in her life?

The best thing to do would be to teach the dog what you want in these situations. Good obedience will help in guiding the dog towards good behavior and show the dog that you have control of the situation.

Have you looked for a trainer or OB class in your area? That would be a great place to start.

When a dog saves the life of a man, it becomes clear that partnership knows no bounds.
