Nuisance Barking :(
I refuse to get rid of my dog. We have run into an issue that I need help with fixing. When we leave ( I do not leave often but yesterday I was gone for about 3 hours) my 6 month old GSD barks/whines I'm guessing the entire time. I do not know what to do. She is crated because she like to dumpster dive if we leave her out, with the occasional couch/ottoman eating. Her brother (a 2 year old Lhasa apso) is not crated and roams the apartment which I'm guessing is antagonizing for her. I need help with ways to stop her barking. I understand she is a dog and dogs bark but I have until the end of Feb to "fix" her or we have to either get rid of her or pay the early termination of the lease we just signed. I do not want to do either but I know my husband will not break our lease. I love this dog like one of my kids and do not want to lose her. Please help.

It might help if the Lhasa apso could be crated also. Or at least put your gsd's crate in another room with the door closed. If you aren't doing it already, a kong or some type of interactive treat toy may help to keep your gsd occupied while she is crated. Since you only have a month to fix the problem, you also may want to consider an anti-bark collar.

Make sure you are giving her time in the crate even on days you are home. It will help her get used to being in there, plenty of fun chews. Several other threads have recommended playing crate games (throwing kibble in for her to get) or feeding in the crate. Try shutting high value treats/toys in the crate without her inside ("good things are in the crate, I WANT to be in there too!")

Another suggestion I found but did not try was to get ready to leave, then not go anywhere or come back within several minutes to cut down on anxiety. All of Mary Beth's solutions are ones I have seen before too.

I played a lot of crate games with Rommel and he is now no longer noisy when we put him in to go somewhere. I would even say he even likes his little "den". If he decides he wants to go to bed before us he will stand at the bedroom door until we let him in and he will flop down in his crate!
