My dog gets ganged up during playtime

Hi I am new to this forum and have a question. My 12 week old GSD puppy started kindergarten last night during the initial play time a couple of malamutes started to pick on her and before long all the puppies were after her. She was overwhelmed and ran for her life. It seemed like she was alright when it was just her one on one with the other puppies but they would all eventually get on her again, what can I do to make her get over this? Thank you

Whatever this kindergarten is, get her out of there. You don't need gangs of dogs bullying your puppy.

I wouldn't force my dog to play with dogs that are picking on him. Just my opinion. This could create a lot of fear and, in the future, fear aggression.

It's natural for an unsocialized pup to be scared in a social environment at first, though. My dog tried to escape the first day of daycare, but the next day he was playing with them -- plus I know and trust the staff. Increased GUIDED socialization will help, but if it keeps happening, I'd call it quits. The staff shouldn't be letting this happen either.

It's your job to protect your pup.

Beat me to it!

She is supposed to be getting socialized "not" traumatized! Your job is to protect your dog. If this "training" class can't keep puppies from ganging up on your pup, there inept anyway.

Your dog gets traumatized here and you are going to have serious issues to deal with down the road!

I had the same issue with the puppy class I took Delgado to. I started this thread to talk about it:

http://www.germanshepherds.com/forum...ss-issues.html

In the end there was no damage done to Delgado either physically or psychologically but I wouldn't recommend it. I'm no longer going to be doing a puppy class that allows play, I would rather them learn to focus on obedience in a class setting and just have a relaxed time then allow a free for all rough play. With the proper management puppy play time can be wonderful but it comes down to the trainer keeping control

Talk to the trainer, go early or stay late, or set up an appointment. Whatever works for you both and lay out your concerns, if you're happy with the rest of the class then you can skip the play time and simply go for the obedience/work phase.

Don't let it happen in the first place. Your pup is still learning confidence, that is NOT helping. Set your dog up for success, not failure.

I agree to get her out of there or don't participate in play time. That is not socialization. This class should be controlled in my opinion.

Thanks for the help I think we will try it again one more time and if the same thing happens we will call it quits.
