GSD and Cattle

My 10 month old hasn't had an issue with cattle before about a month ago. Now he has started chasing and nipping at them when we feed. When no one is outside, he generally will leave them alone. Any suggestions on how to train him to not even go into the pens?

We bought a shock collar but i can't get it tight enough to make contact through his thick undercoat. Suggestions?

If he is only chasing and nipping at them when you are with him, it does seem to me like herding behavior. You are feeding them and he is trying to corral them for you. So there is the option of working with him on herding and training him to do that so he will learn when to herd the cattle and when to leave them alone. Instead of training him not to go into the cattle pens, I think teaching the "leave it" command would be better.

i think he's herding. that's a natural reaction. train your to
"come", "no", "stop", etc. you can always leash him untill he's
trained.

Mine does this with sheep; I use "leave it" sometimes but more frequently just recall her to me and have her wait at my side and then we walk away. She seems to understand "leave it" as applicable to the specific sheep she was close to at the time of the command rather than the whole herd and will go towards a different sheep while still technically obeying the "leave it." Clever girl... She ignores cattle, loves horses :)

as for the collar, if it's a Dogtra, they make longer prongs.
