Grooming-affectionate

Is there a term for the "nibbling" that lady does? In puppy class we discussed it, and the trainer told us it was a sign of affection. We choose not to discourage it because we see it as being just that....she was nibbling at several people in lowes last night...everyone was her best friend..but I didn't know how to explain to them that she was not biting:)

Flea biting? The light nips with the front of the mouth?

Yes that's what it looks like...but without the fleas! She does it to my sons beard:)

It is more play related I think, but in either case I wouldn't let her do it to strangers. It can scare people. Zebu love tapped my gf's mom on the butt when he was a little guy and she has been intimidated ever since.

I second Baillif on this one. As a stranger it's cute when a puppy nibbles, but when it's a large adult dog it can make people very nervous. The last thing you need is for someone to cause a stir for you because they misinterpret the nibble.

Lisl does it to me sometimes. I don't say anything to her about it. I thought it was because she was trying to groom me. I think that's why she gives so many kisses in the morning too (besides trying to wake me up).

I hadn't really seen her do it to anyone other than people in our home, until last night. Guy at lowes comes up to her, and he obviously smells "doggy"...and was petting lady..then she starting nibbling him and he squealed like a girl...then I too started thinking that I probably need to not let her do this to others outside of her people....

Yeah getting a fun reaction out of someone like squealing is just going to encourage him lol

if my pup nipped/licked a guy and it made him squeal like a girl i would have encouraged it so i could have something to laugh heartily about.

Havoc nibbles his family and a few close friends. It's a token of his highest regard. He loved to nibble our old cat and I would stop it until I realized that the cat was encouraging him. Her last months were spent with a spit mohawk down her spine but she would be purring like a motor.

I've never seen him even begin to nibble anyone outside of our "pack" but I can see where it would be disconcerting. My old pit used to like to "smash" people. She would creep close while a guest was seated and than throw her weight on their chest and lick their face. A few times, she really scared people but that just made her tail wag harder.
