I had a dobie who chewed through wooden blinds. Totally destroyed them. Actually made his gums bleed while doing so. Thank God he stopped at the window (which was shut).

I actually had a cat (wayy smaller than a GSD) push out the corner of the screen and escape (the screens were secured with nails bent in to secure the frame of the screen so you couldn't just push out the whole thing..the cat actually pushed the screen itself out.

Coming home from work, as I pulled into my driveway and noticed something unusual - my foster dog, Gracie, was hanging about halfway out the screen (torn) on the second story of my house. The window had only been open about 2 inches (and these are old heavy windows that are hard to open) and she had managed to push it up and tear the screen open. Good thing she was such a fat girl that she got stuck! We normally have the door to that room closed, but must have forgotten to close it that particular morning. That was a very close call indeed.
So, the answer is YES - they can definitely tear open a screen.

Finn went right through our back door screen like it was never there. Hubby and I were working in the yard and we were laughing and carrying on. I picked up an errant tennis ball and tossed it to the other side of the yard. We heard a loud bang and we saw Finn flying through the yard. We repaired the screen and it wasn't more than a month later when he came through the screen the other way after I dropped his tennis balls on the floor.
They can and will. We never open our windows from the bottom, just the top.

I've had a dog hop through a window screen before, but fortunately landed in the secure back yard. My puppy turned the screen on our glass door into a 'doggie door' last summer, by popping it out of the frame. I have a wall panel from a wire crate permanently fixed against the screen on the sliding glass doors to keep that secure. My brother made a very nice art-deco style installation on his front screen door, with heavy wire and 'o' ring screws, to keep his dogs from continually jumping through it.

I left my windows open on a beautiful summer day in Colorado. My two cats were home and at the time they were 5 and 6 months old. I got a call from my landlady around 11 a.m. telling me how happy she was that I changed my mind and decided to let my cats outside (she was always telling me how cruel it was to keep indoor only cats).
I freaked and told her they weren't supposed to be out. I rushed home but she had already rounded them up and returned them to the safety of my apartment. So to answer your question, YES. If a couple of kittens can bust out through a screen than a dog could too. |

Tazer, our Cocker Spaniel, went through the GLASS on the window in our kitchen when we were having a lure coursing event. After that he was crated - in the BASEMENT - during events.
Mauser almost chewed through our bathroom door when DH put him in there so he could feed our girl Kaynya, who was in season. Another 10 minutes or so and he would have made it through.
