My puppy is almost 5 months and we have a big back yard that we play ball/ come games in everyday. If I'm not actively playing with him, he'll sit outside and chew on his toys or a stick if I'm sitting outside also, but he doesn't play by himself (and comes in if I come in). I hear about all these dog owners that let their dog out in the back to play and I was just wondering how many of your dogs will play by themselves?
I don't mind playing with him, so I don't mind that he doesn't play by himself, I'm just wondering if this is weird, a GSD thing, a young puppy thing or I dunno...? |

Zeeva is pretty self-entertaining. She'll kick around stuff, dig in the snow, search for kibble that I throw out...I think it just depends on the dog c:.

If I let Kono outside and leave her she will find a stick or we have an very old boot outside and she will play with them, whip the boot around. She will do that for about 15 mins and then she will want to come in.

Same here. They will start barking and getting into trouble from boredom.
I want them with me and otherwise they are crated.

Penny is still working on her separation. If i leave her in the back yard shell bark and whine until someone goes out with her

Mine will go out to "take care of business" by themselves, but then its right back inside. If we are outside playing fetch or whatever and I head for the door, they are right behind me. They are inside while we are at work and wherever we after that.

Youre doing a good job then. But dont just leave them alone, its a slippery slope thing and then youll leave them out all day and they will go crazy barking at things you werent there to correct, destroy yard, escape, etc... Leaving the dog to itself in the yard does nothing for the dog unless you are physically unable to exercise it. Even then you should supervise.
