Discrimination against dog breeds... By dogs?
I recently noticed at work that Koda takes better to some breeds than others. For example, if there are two dogs in runs across from each other and both are super calm, but one is a pit bull and the other is a greyhound... She ignores the pit bull and greets the greyhound.
She won't start fights, and she doesn't posture at all. She simply doesn't care for dogs of certain breeds. Ex. Pit bulls, mastiff breeds, huskies, beagles, basset hounds, labs, etc. She ignores them completely. Won't sniff them, play with them, or acknowledge their existance at all. Whereas other GSDs, greyhounds, akitas, malamutes, dobermans, rottweilers, and others she absolutely adores regardless of their energy level/gender/size/age. Also- I know it isn't me, because I adore huskies, mastiffs, labs, etc based on their personalities. So even if I love the dog, if it's one of those breeds, she ignores it. Does anyone else experience this? Or is my dog senile? :p |
Actually, my dog is very reactive to other dogs..but doesn't make much noise AT ALL around dobermans. Hardly ever barks or whines. Its super weird.

That's just uncanny! When Koda went through her reactive phase, it was every breed except GSDs. Once we trained through it, she became like she is now. She ignores certain breeds. And others she  's

Well we always saw that all the gsds in dog class would go play with the other gsds after class.
|
wondered about this..
My dogs will take to other GSDs. They do not like little white dog breeds... |
Midnight- That's the most common one I've always seen. But Koda's the only dog I've ever seen actively dislike particular breeds. Lol.
Zyppi- Oh yeah! Poodles and doodles are at the top of Koda's dislike list! I even met a chocolate poodle I thought was insanely amazing, and Koda wouldn't come within 50 ft of him. -_- |
I want my dog to stop being reactive. Its really difficult for me when he's at work with me. (I have to take him for the time being) he jumps and growls and whines in the car but as soon as I take him out and get him close enough he shuts up and just calmly sniffs and tries to play.
But when walking him he is awful about it..except for the dob down the street. He gets all quiet and his hair goes down. The dog he spent the first year of his life with was a Dob. Literally insuperable til the day our doberman died. |
I'm sorry for that loss :/ Dobermans have always been another breed of interest for me. Koda's first same-age playmate was a dobie puppy at the dog park when she was 8 weeks. Poor thing's ears were taped from being cropped xD
If you just keep working at it, it's possible to move through it (: Trust me, I\'ve been there. Try a head harness, LAT, and lots of "Focus" obedience training. When Koda reverts a bit and bristles, I just say "Eyes on me," and she\'s back paying attention to me and ignoring the dog. |
I was just talking about this today. Mine likes all dogs and puppies...she loves puppies. She favors small dogs and doesn\'t acknowledge lots of bigger ones. She has played nicely with a pit bull and today we met a beautiful male Black/Red GSD that was really good with mine and vice versa. She has also done well with my friends boxer. I think the initial meeting has lots to do with how they react...in the face=not good...sniffing the butt=good:D

That\'s just it. Koda will not interact with these breeds PERIOD. They simply don\'t exist y to her.
