I just realized that Spirit, 8 months old now, has never rolled in the grass. My golden retriever always does.
Is this a breed characteristic or is Spirit unusual this way? I kinda like it ... he stays clean

I think you are just lucky
Enjoy it. On a side note: I did notice through the years, that my female shepherd loves to do all the yucky stuff, and my male shepherds always stayed clean. LOL I always called Ginger my little piggy

I think it just depends on the dog.
My Hector loves to roll when he's relaxed and happy.

Gunner's a "rolling in the grass" fool. Does it every chance he gets.

Yep, I've also made the connection to being relaxed and happy. Need I say anything else? ![]() That's a "happy face", if ever there was one. ![]()

Hondo rarely rolls. He will lay on his back with his legs in the air, but that's about it. My Golden, Doxie & Lacy all roll around in the grass/dirt/mud etc.

Gaia's not one for rolling in the grass but will never pass up a good roll in a mud puddle.

Gunner says "come on, try it, you'll love it".
