So...I hate to brag...but my little Maverick is really such a great puppy at 6.5 months old! I have to give props to the lady who had him before as far as training. His only downfall is chewing.
He doesn't go for things we have laying around *too* often. If he does, it's usually something completely off the wall like a figurine or his dog sister's sweater. When he does this, we try to replace the behavior with chew toys or rawhides. I have already went through about 4 rawhides with him in the short week he's been our baby. Does anybody have any recommendations for longer lasting bones? I'm used to ankle biters who take days and days to chew on one. Mav seems to demolish them in a hour or two. Should I maybe just limit his time with them daily? |

Kai is also a chewer
a raw hide only lasts him about 30 -1hr, A large raw hide will last him about an hour and a half. We bought an antler from out local pet shop. Compared to rawhide they are quite expensive. I bought the medium size which was £9 about $12. Its lasted him 3 months and only now have i seen damamge to the antler. Its amazing heres a link to amazon: Amazon.co.uk: antler dog chew |

I second the antler! However a note of warning...I left the antler with Kaiser for him to chew on while I was at work (5 days a week) and he has now WORN DOWN his canines significantly. And he isn't even 10 months old yet.

Definitely in moderation
At least, if he's a heavy chewer. Oh, and some dogs are confused by the antlers while others take to them immediately (speaking from experience). Sometimes it helps if you smear some peanut butter (or whatever his favorite treat is) onto the antler to help get him in the right direction

i worry about raw hide and the way it's digested.
i give my dog center cut femur bones (beef) and elk antlers. the black kongs are suppose to be a little tougher. my dog has access to his chews and toys 24/7.

I was able to get a large bully stick from my vet's office. I hadn't seen any that would last him more than an hour in the pet store. So when I'm in there, I pick one up. He has an antler in his kennel, but I don't think he's ever really chewed on it.
