Was out walking my on leash when a stray dog came running up. At first things seemed ok but then dog charged at my four year old grandson who got scared and yelled no which then caused my sheperd Rosie to start barking and snarling I was trying to keep them from fighting and a nice woman came from across the street and helped sho the dog one way while we went the other way, the dog was not barking or growling at my grandson buy scared him anyways, don't know what he would have done and I can't fault Rosie for protecting her humans. What would some of you do when this happens? What can I carry for protection? Also Rosie is a two year old rescue that I have had for about six weeks so I don't know al her reations to other dogs. We are in private training and will go to group class next. so I will get to know her actions better.

Training, training, training. Hopefully your trainer knows german shepherds and working with possible reactiveness. If not, I have a strong recommendation for a trainer in Parker that has competed in schutzhund for a very long time but also does pet obedience, which gives you the best of both worlds. I wouldn't be too worried, just make sure the training you're doing is helping

I know one of my buddies was telling me that a pit bull charged him one day while he had his lab out front with him. When the pit was running at him, he said, "Where's your ball?!" The dog stopped and started looking around, and he took his lab and himself inside. I thought that was pretty clever (if it worked every time).
I would start carrying pepper spray or bear spray. The last thing I want to do is hurt a dog in any way, but if it means protecting myself or my fur child, I'll do whatever necessary.

Start carrying pepper spray and/or a nice solid walking stick to help use as a block. From the sounds of things, your dog didnt react until she felt your grandson was threatened so for me, thats a very good sign.
Stick with training and enjoy group class when you get there! I'm sure your new girl will do fabulously. Sounds like she cares about your grandson very much already if he got scared and she stepped up to drive away the threat against him. Not saying thats always a perk but given the situation, i'd say its one in this case. How's that nice Colorado weather going?! I miss home so much. lol. I'm from the springs.

yeah i know the feeling. Every time I walk Shasta, 9 times out of 10 there is a loose husky. Its always a husky. I have no idea why we NEVER run into any other dogs but its always a husky. I know huskies like to get out and run and have their own adventures but just once, if we're on a walk and a dog runs up on us, i'd really like it to be something other than a husky. there's another GSD in the housing area we're in (military) and several other breeds but they manage to get out of their fence and they run around to the front door. the huskies around here just run for it!

We took Joey for a walk (on leash) in an area where a new park is being built. In the distance we saw a large dog off leash, with the owner nowhere in sight. Thankfully Joey did not see it; we turned around and went back to the car. As we were doing that, the dog started coming closer, then walked away.
What's with these owners that think they can leave their dog off leash and not think another dog will come by? Ticks me off no end. |
