I have had Rocky since 8 wks old. He is now 1yr. He has been crated every night until recently. He prefers to sleep outside. I want him to sleep inside eventually uncrated. How can I train him to do this? I don't trust him unsupervised yet.

Just keep the crate up but leave the door open for a night and see how it goes? If he's staying a 'good dog' just replace the crate with a dog bed.
If you have baby gates or want to close a few doors the first few nights, thay may help your peace of mind too.

Yes to the above. If you want him to sleep inside, have him sleep inside. Start by puppy-proofing the room that he'll be staying in and closing doors/baby gating access to other areas. Leave the crate in there but with the door open.
